Politics, power, and a cliffhanger that broke me. Read my Season 3 thoughts on The Diplomat.
I absolutely loved this! A girl inherits a pawnshop hidden away in the backstreets of Tokyo. Only the lost can find it. They have the option to pawn their life's decisions or their deepest regrets. The author has created a fantastical world in this novel that I would love to immerse myself in. It’s a combination of magical realism and adventure—journeying through a mystical world and also a journey of self-discovery. It evokes the ‘what if’ scenarios that arise when we confront the consequences of our life's decisions and choices. Oh, and seriously, someone NEEDS to turn this tale into an animated film! Jumping into puddles, night markets in the clouds, paper cranes, and riding on songs and rumors give this novel a Studio Ghibli vibe. It’s magical! The origami dust jacket is also on point! ❣️ I'm yearning to fold it, but at the same time, I don't know if I could, nor if I ever will!
